How We're Building a Low-Waste Marketplace at AveoEarth

When we launched AveoEarth, we made a promise: every decision on this platform would be held to a higher standard than the industry default. That means packaging, shipping, product vetting, and even the way we write our policies.

Two years in, we want to be transparent about what that actually looks like — the wins, the compromises, and what we're still figuring out.

The Packaging Problem

E-commerce and excessive packaging go hand in hand. Most platforms don't regulate what their sellers use to ship goods. A 200g product arrives inside a box three times its size, cushioned by single-use bubble wrap, wrapped in non-recyclable tape.

We decided early that AveoEarth sellers would have to meet minimum standards before listing. Here's what that means today:

    1. No expanded polystyrene (EPS/Styrofoam) as a fill material
    2. Box-to-product fit requirements — sellers are asked to ship within one standard size above the product
    3. At least one of: recyclable outer packaging, compostable mailers, or reused/upcycled secondary packaging
We're not perfect. Enforcement is hard when you're a growing marketplace. But we've built it into our seller onboarding flow and flag non-compliant listings during review.

Shipping & Carbon

Shipping is the biggest environmental cost in any e-commerce operation. We've partnered with two carbon-neutral logistics providers and default to them for sellers who opt in.

For sellers who use their own logistics, we show estimated carbon output transparently on the product listing. We believe customers deserve to know.

We're also experimenting with consolidated shipping windows — where buyers in the same city can wait an extra day to have their orders bundled. Early results show a 12% reduction in individual trips for participating customers.

Product Vetting

Every new seller on AveoEarth goes through a manual review. We look at:

  1. Materials used and their sourcing claims
  2. Whether any "eco" claims are verifiable (certifications, audits, or clear methodology)
  3. How the product extends, replaces, or outlasts conventional alternatives
We reject about 30% of applications. That's uncomfortable — we're leaving revenue on the table. But accepting products that don't meet our baseline would hollow out the entire premise of this platform.

What We're Still Working On

We're honest that there are gaps. We don't yet:

    1. Have a verified carbon offset program for every transaction
    2. Offer full end-of-life guidance for every product category
    3. Support full supply chain traceability for all sellers
These are our next focus areas. We're a small team and we're building deliberately rather than quickly.

Our Commitment

We believe low-waste commerce is possible. It requires more work, more honesty, and more patience than the default. We're committed to that harder path, and we'll continue to share our progress here.
