Seller Story: How GreenRoots Scaled Ethical Home Products
A behind-the-scenes story of a small brand growing responsibly through transparent sourcing and better materials.
Seller Story: How GreenRoots Scaled Ethical Home Products
When Elena Gomez started GreenRoots in her tiny apartment in 2022, she was pouring small-batch soy candles into upcycled jars and wrapping them in pages torn from old books. Today, GreenRoots is one of AveoEarth's top-performing vendors, shipping hundreds of sustainable home goods weekly.
We sat down with Elena to discuss the realities of scaling a business without compromising on ethics.
The Bottleneck of Better Sourcing
"The hardest part of growing," Elena says, "wasn't finding customers. It was finding suppliers who actually cared."
When GreenRoots needed to move beyond upcycled jars to a more scalable model, Elena spent six months searching for a glass manufacturer. Most suppliers demanded massive minimum order quantities (MOQs) and shipped products wrapped in layers of unrecyclable plastic.
"We finally found a partner in Ohio who used recycled glass and agreed to ship to us using corrugated cardboard wrapping instead of bubble wrap. It cost us 15% more per unit, but it was non-negotiable for our brand."
Redefining "Fast" Shipping
One of GreenRoots' biggest risks was a deliberate decision not to compete on shipping speed.
"We clearly state on our AveoEarth store that orders ship twice a week—Tuesdays and Fridays," Elena explains. "We don't do next-day air. We consolidate trips to the post office and use carbon-neutral ground shipping exclusively."
Surprisingly, customers didn't complain. The transparency built trust. By explaining *why* shipping took four days instead of two, GreenRoots turned a potential negative into a brand pillar.
Scaling the Team Ethically
As demand grew, GreenRoots needed help. Elena chose to partner with a local social enterprise program that employs individuals transitioning out of homelessness to assist with packing and fulfillment.
"Sustainability isn't just about the environment; it’s about people," she notes. "Paying a living wage, offering flexible hours, and treating our warehouse team with dignity is just as important as using recycled materials."
Advice for New Sustainable Brands
When asked what advice she has for new sellers joining AveoEarth, Elena is pragmatic.
"Don't try to be perfect on day one. Be transparent. If your current supplier uses a bit of plastic tape because that's all you can afford right now, tell your customers that, and tell them your plan to phase it out. Modern consumers are incredibly forgiving if you are honest with them, but they can spot greenwashing a mile away."
